We left rainy Lisboa early and drove to Evora via 6000 year old standing stones known as Cromlech dos almendres.

The stones are set out on a high point with commanding views to the east. (Spelled oest) Key stones are placed to predict and record key parts of the year. (Equinox and summer winter solstice). In fact the town still celebrates midsummer with a 10 day festival. It is said that on the eve of the festival the great lady can be seen appearing from the stones (brushing her hair). The ancient cultures of the great lady is well and truly alive right through Portugal. She is seen most commonly as Mother of God in the Christian churches. In these churches she is placed higher than the holy trinity and goes under various names. Our Lady of the stars was one of my favourites. Anyway. Back to the stones. The people of 6000 years ago had an astounding knowledge of the movement of the earth through the heavens and literally passed it on to us in stone.

Then to the ancient town of Evora. Established by the Phoenicians then ruled by the Romans.
After the Romans came the Moors and the the crusaders.
We wandered about and took in the main sights before the cold wind and rain drove us to the shelter of our room.
My camera battery failed before I could snap the room of bones. Interesting place. The monks that built it would have alot in common with the Buddhists of today.
Here is the link to the room of bones.

We have since left Evora and are now at Jerez.
