Lavra .... North of Porto

North coast Portugal. Small fishing village.
Wild storms swing in from North Atlantic and create massive swells and high winds. Very harsh. In the midst of this we see Portugese families living in houses on the beach and farming the land beside them. Fishing and farming hand in hand. In the afternoon the locals light up the churrasco and throw on some fish and vegetables and the whole street smells smokey and yummy.

  2. On all the news channels here. 3 swimmers died just south of us. Authorities frustrated etc. Just like Australia. "We told em not to swim but they ignore us" etc. Was a big powerful swell. Feel lucky to have seen it.

    1. Yeah it's better than the pictures. A month would be great. Portuguese people are friendly and helpful. Very laid back and smile alot. We've been rushing to get to Lisbon in time for the triathlon but after that we can cruise wherever we want. Driving is not bad. The Portuguese make up the road rules on the fly. This is challenging when trying to navigate a three lane roundabout on the wrong side of the road.We are learning though that if it gets to much then we do what the locals do. Stop the car in the middle of the roundabout. Stop it wherever you want. Preferably so it blocks access to at least one direction of traffic. Don't bother using hazard lights. Just stop. Anywhere. Leave the car and go shopping. Don't bother about finding a car park.
Apparently Portugal has the highest rate of car accidents in all of Europe. Not surprising after sharing the roads. France and Spain much easier driving.
