Coimbra pt 2

M in the passenger seat. T in the slow lane on the motorway. Slow lane is 135 kmh. Being passed constantly by cars doing 160 to 180. Slow is good. Shared driving is good also.

So M now gets a chance to check some pics and write a post.

After our swim this morning we strolled up the hill behind our apartment to the University of Coimbra. Established in 11th century and still very much a working University.

It's strange to be wandering through beautiful old buildings on a UNESCO self guided tour and then discover that the ancient room you want to see is a lecture theatre full of students with laptops doing what students with laptops do best. (Looking bored and checking Facebook). If there was a place on earth that resembles Hogwarts, then this is it. (Although the the gilded paintings that adorn the elaborately carved spiral stone staircases don't move and speak when you pass them.
The students in their traditional black flowing gowns who are taking a break in the cool tiled and shaded courtyards  look like they are straight out of the movie.
As well as being a university, it was also the kings palace. We were fortunate enough to see the throne room and the armoury, before seeing the "baroque masterpiece" known as library Joanna. Think Hogwarts again. No photos allowed inside.

Doorways open to an old Byzantine courtyard.
Another doorway to add to my collection
Hogwarts.
