Evora --> Jerez --> Estapona (via Ronda)

From the Roman ruins of Evora to Jerez. Home of sherry. If it's not from Jerez it's not sherry. Also home to the breeders and trainers of Andalusian horses. (Arab horses).

Got up early. (Not the best choice of lodgings. Actually both of us are hard pressed to remember worse....but that's another story for another post maybe).

Got up early for a run around town and discovered the crowded local coffee haunt. We'd come back to that later.

Then after a shower and breakfast we navigated our way through another maze of "old town" narrow streets.

At one point we saw the Alzheimer's support van moving slowly down one of the wider streets.
Holy heck. It's hard enough not getting lost and disoriented when we don't have Alzheimer's. Every house on every street is whitewashed and has yellow trim and brown shutters. Thank the holy mother for Google navigation.

The highlight was the 10th century moorish castle in the centre of town. 5 euros got us gardens, engineering, irrigation, an 1100 year old mosque, armoury, stables, olive presses, and a panoramic view of the city from the castles defensive ramparts.

Unfortunately the camera obscura (which was the main reason that M trudged the distance) was out of action due to the weather.

Fortified Spanish village on the way to Jerez.
Beautiful silky oak catching the last days of sun. This was one of the bigger streets in town.
Roses in the moorish castle garden. Islamic architecture was integrated seamlessly into the gardens and fountains. When the conquistador s took over, alot of the magnificently engineered irrigation systems were destroyed.
The bridge linking two sides of Ronda. If you look carefully you will see a small door above the middle arch. This was the prison. Prisoners were kept here before being forced to jump to their death during the Spanish civil war.
The bridge took 40 years to build. Look it up. Ronda Spain Bridge.
